Gister, 11 september 2008, is het (re-)introduceren van creationisme in de Britse klaslokalen in een speech voorgesteld door professor Michael Reiss, hoofd educatie van de Royal Society. Hét Briste instituut voor de wetenschap.
Dit is door verschillende media, waaronder The Independent, opgepikt en uitgebreid verslag van gedaan als ware het een voorstel om creationisme op te nemen in de ‘science classes’.
Dat heeft heel wat wenkbrauwen doen fronsen. The Royal Society? Creationisme?
Reiss is naast hoofd educatie en wetenschapper óók een priester, maar voorstander van intelligent design, creationisme in een nieuw jasje, is hij niet te noemen. Wel waarschuwt hij ervoor intelligent design niet als een overduidelijk simpele minconceptie af te serveren. Dat zou fout zijn, zo argumenteert Reiss. De creationistische overtuiging is eerder een onderdeel van een complexe hoeveelheid aan culturele ideeën.
Hoeveel invloed Reiss heeft in de Royal Society is moeilijk te zeggen, maar dat de Society niet blij is met de berichtgeving rondom creationisme is een feit. Vandaag kwam het met een persbericht waarin het zich als neerzet als tegenstander van het onderwijzing van creationisme als wetenschap.
Hierin heeft professor Reiss het volgende verduidelijkende statement afgegeven:
Some of my comments about the teaching of creationism have been misinterpreted as suggesting that creationism should be taught in science classes. Creationism has no scientific basis. However, when young people ask questions about creationism in science classes, teachers need to be able to explain to them why evolution and the Big Bang are scientific theories but they should also take the time to explain how science works and why creationism has no scientific basis. I have referred to science teachers discussing creationism as a worldview’; this is not the same as lending it any scientific credibility.
