Dear fellow-unbelievers,

Nothing would have kept me from joining you except the loss of my voice (at least my speaking voice) which in turn is due to a long argument I am currently having with the specter of death. Nobody ever wins this argument, though there are some solid points to be made while the discussion goes on. I have found, as the enemy becomes more familiar, that all the special pleading for salvation, redemption and supernatural deliverance appears even more hollow and artificial to me than it did before. I hope to help defend and pass on the lessons of this for many years to come, but for now I have found my trust better placed in two things: the skill and principle of advanced medical science, and the comradeship of innumerable friends and family, all of them immune to the false consolations of religion. It is these forces among others which will speed the day when humanity emancipates itself from the mind-forged manacles of servility and superstitition. It is our innate solidarity, and not some despotism of the sky, which is the source of our morality and our sense of decency.

That essential sense of decency is outraged every day. Our theocratic enemy is in plain view. Protean in form, it extends from the overt menace of nuclear-armed mullahs to the insidious campaigns to have stultifying pseudo-science taught in American schools. But in the past few years, there have been heartening signs of a genuine and spontaneous resistance to this sinister nonsense: a resistance which repudiates the right of bullies and tyrants to make the absurd claim that they have god on their side. To have had a small part in this resistance has been the greatest honor of my lifetime: the pattern and original of all dictatorship is the surrender of reason to absolutism and the abandonment of critical, objective inquiry. The cheap name for this lethal delusion is religion, and we must learn new ways of combating it in the public sphere, just as we have learned to free ourselves of it in private.

Our weapons are the ironic mind against the literal: the open mind against the credulous; the courageous pursuit of truth against the fearful and abject forces who would set limits to investigation (and who stupidly claim that we already have all the truth we need). Perhaps above all, we affirm life over the cults of death and human sacrifice and are afraid, not of inevitable death, but rather of a human life that is cramped and distorted by the pathetic need to offer mindless adulation, or the dismal belief that the laws of nature respond to wailings and incantations.

As the heirs of a secular revolution, American atheists have a special responsibility to defend and uphold the Constitution that patrols the boundary between Church and State. This, too, is an honor and a privilege. Believe me when I say that I am present with you, even if not corporeally (and only metaphorically in spirit…) Resolve to build up Mr Jefferson’s wall of separation. And don’t keep the faith.

Met het thema ‘Is religie een kracht voor het goede in de wereld?’ werd er op 26 november door de Canadese Munk School of Global Affairs een debat georganiseerd tussen niemand minder dan Tony Blair, de katholieke ex-prime minister van Groot Brittannië en oprichter van The Tony Blair Faith Foundation, en Christopher Hitchens, journalist, schrijver, contrair intellectueel en atheïst (schrijver van het heerlijke boek God is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything). Als je geen zin hebt om de negen delen van zo’n 15 minuten elk te bekijken, hier onder een kort verslagje.

Christopher Hitchens overspoelt de voormalige prime minister met voorbeelden waarom religie overwegend een kracht voor kwaad is in de wereld (viering van onwetendheid, divisie en conflict, etc.) waarna Tony Blair als een gebroken plaat blijft steken op zijn favoriete zinnetje “Maar er zijn ook goede gelovigen die goede dingen doen”. Dat weet iedereen, wat is de som vraagt Hitchens? Miljoenen dood door aids in de derde wereld door verbieden van condooms of de paar die gered worden door katholieke hulporganisaties die voedsel en medicijnen geven als je maar Jesus Christus in je hart accepteert?

Tony Blair is teleurstellend ineffectief met zijn drukke gezwaai (om zijn lege argumenten te benadrukken ongetwijfeld) en bijna jankerige smeekbede voor respect voor religie. De man weet geen enkel overtuigend argument neer te zetten en weet ironische genoeg toch nog te claimen dat HIJ de enige echte goede interpretatie van religie bezit. Verder moet hij toegeven aan Hitchens dat de Bijbel een onzin boek is dat je moet negeren, dat er geen religie nodig is voor het doen van goede daden en dat religieuzen verantwoordelijk zijn voor ongoddelijke veel kwaad. In één hilarisch gedeelte van zijn bijna waanzinnige relaas claimt hij dat het Ierse probleem tussen Katholieken en Protestanten opgelost werd door een inter-religieuze coalitie, waarop Hitchens scherp terug vuurde met; “Maar hoe denkt meneer Blair dat het probleem in Ierland precies ontstaan is?”. Religie kan een onderdeel zijn van de oplossing houdt Blair vol, terwijl Hitchens voorbeeld na voorbeeld van lijdende vrouwen onder het juk van religie, stervende volkeren, wereldwijde conflicten en de dreiging voor de waarden van de verlichting op de tot voor respect bedelende ex-prime minister afschiet.

Debat is een groot woord voor deze klassieke slachting. Vervelend om naar te kijken, je krijgt een beetje medelijden met Tony Blair. Ergens natuurlijk ook smakelijk amusant om hem te zien bedelen voor applaus:

[Wij] zagen de nood om een platform in het leven te roepen voor bekeerlingen tot de islam. Nieuwe moslims krijgen vaak te maken met specifieke problemen, zoals problemen in de familiekring of in de kenniskring. Op school of op de werkvloer zijn de reacties ook niet altijd louter positief. Wederzijds onbegrip ligt vaak ten grondslag aan deze reacties.

In Netwerk zagen we Dennis als Abdelkrim door het leven vol onbegrip gaan. In Engeland ligt dat anders. Daar zijn de islamieten wat assertiever en moet zelfs paus Benedictus XVI mogelijk voor zijn leven vrezen zodra hij Birmingham bereikt:

Dat schrijft de Islamic Standard vandaag volgens De Telegraaf, maar dat is wat kort en een maandje te laat door de bocht. Een alternatieve en becommentarieerde interpretatie van het Islamic Standard stuk vindt men hier.

De oproep laat niet onverlet dat, zelfs als een klein deel van de moslimbevolking wordt gemobiliseerd, de actie tegen de paus al kans van slagen heeft om een statement te kunnen maken. In Birmingham, na de hoofdstad Londen de grootste stad van het land, wonen ruim 150.000 moslims. Er zijn meer Britten die zeggen dat de paus een probleem heeft zodra hij voet op hun eiland zet. Als Dawkins en Hitchins hem arresteren zijn we ook helemaal klaar met Benny en anders niet.

Ik hoop dat ie het haalt. Zoals ik dat voor ieder hoop die te maken krijgt met een potentieel dodelijke ziekte.

Erg interessant debat in 12 delen. Niet veel nieuwe argumenten (zeker niet van de christenen, die al duizenden jaren met niets nieuws op de proppen gekomen zijn), maar desalniettemin de moeite van het bekijken waard. Verbazingwekkend om te zien hoezeer de christenen stranden in hun argumenten en ten slotte niets anders meer rest dan Hitchens in hun slotbetoog onterecht te verwijten dat hij niet op hun argumenten is ingegaan.
